Now that October has arrived, it’s time to celebrate the most wonderful holiday of the year: Halloween! It also means that every streaming service, including Netflix, will be offering its best spooky films to appease horror fans of all stripes. With The Midnight Club and Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities,
Netflix is adding some thrills and chills to the world of television. However, when it comes to movies, the streaming giant spares no ghosts to frighten us. We’ve compiled a helpful list of the top seven original movies arriving on Netflix in October to guide you through Spooky Season. This month brings us a fresh Stephen King adaptation, fright-filled family fare, and suspenseful thrillers.
1. Mr. Harrigan’s Phone
Director/Writer: John Lee Hancock
Cast: Donald Sutherland, Jaeden Martell, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Joe Tippett, Cyrus Arnold, Carl Zohan
Available on Netflix: October 5
Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, which is based on the Stephen King book of the same name, examines the unexpected connection between a young person from a low-income family (Jaeden Martell) and an elderly billionaire (Donald Sutherland). Mr. Harrigan engages the young Craig to read him books three times a week as his sight begins to fail him. Years pass during the course of the arrangement as the billionaire teaches the youngster how to deal with opponents brutally and the teenager, in turn, introduces the elderly man to the wonders of smartphone technology. Once Mr. Harrigan passes away, what may have been a straightforward coming-of-age tale takes a sinister turn. However, Craig is still in contact with his old pal because of their smartphones, which appear to be able to speak with both the living world and what is hidden from view. Gerald’s Game and 1922 are just two of the successful King adaptations already available on Netflix, and Mr. Harrigan seems to be another spooky story from the master of horror.
2. The Curse of Bridge Hollow
Director: Jeff Wadlow
Writer: Todd Berger, Robert Rugan
Cast: Marlon Wayans, Priah Ferguson, Rob Riggle, John Michael Higgins, Nia Vardalos, Lauren Lapkus,
Holly J. Barrett, Helen Slayton-Hughes, Kelly Rowland
Available on Netflix: October 14
The Curse of Bridge Hollow will benefit those who want to celebrate Halloween but don’t want to be alarmed. In the movie, Marlon Wayans plays a sceptic science teacher whose life is flipped upside down when his daughter (Priah Ferguson) unintentionally calls malevolent spirits on All Hallow’s Eve. The father and daughter team up to discover a solution to banish the evil that now haunts their life after the spirits take possession of Halloween decorations and
cause mayhem in the community. Even while The Curse of Bridge Hollow leans primarily toward comedy,
it is undoubtedly a horror film, making it the ideal Halloween release to see with your anxious relatives.
3. The School for Good and Evil
Director: Paul Feig
Writer: David Magee
Cast: Sophia Anne Caruso, Sofia Wylie, Laurence Fishburne, Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Flatters, Kit Young, Peter Serafinowicz, Kerry Washington, Charlize Theron
Available on Netflix: October 19
The School for Good and Evil, a Netflix original film based on the popular Soman Chainani book series, is another family-friendly Netflix original. The action of the novel takes place in the eponymous institution, which is also the origin of fairy tales and the location where children are taught how to play either heroes or villains in the tales we tell our children. Sophie (Sophia Anne Caruso) and Agatha (Sofia Wylie), who are best friends, will regrettably be required to join opposing sides of the school, with one destined to become a hero and the other a villain. The School for Good and Evil is one of the biggest Netflix releases for October thanks to its all-star ensemble and massive budget. Moreover, if the movie is a hit, The streaming giant has five additional Chainani books that they can adapt.
4. Descendent
Director: Margaret Brown
Available on Netflix: October 21
Descendent is a non-Halloween documentary created by Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s production business, Higher Ground. Nevertheless, it is rife with horrors. Descendent follows the residents of Africatown, a small Alabama town, as they delve into the individual tales of those who came to America on the Clotilda, the last known slave ship. The film examines how heritage can be a potent force in shaping people’s lives while delving into the terrible history of slavery in the United States.
5. The Good Nurse
Director: Tobias Lindholm
Writer: Krysty Wilson-Cairns
Cast: Jessica Chastain, Eddie Redmayne, Nnamdi Asomugha, Kim Dickens, Noah Emmerich
Available on Netflix: October 26
The Good Nurse, based on the true-crime novel of the same name by Charles Graeber, stars Jessica Chastain as a nurse who begins to develop doubts about one of her coworkers (Eddie Redmayne) when a number of patients in her hospital start to pass away inexplicably. Charlie Cullen was a serial murderer who murdered roughly 300 people over the course of his 16-year nursing career. The thriller chronicles the inquiry that results in the exposure of his horrible crimes. Cullen continues to rank among the most terrible serial killers in American history, in part because in his deranged worldview, he believed that by killing his victims, he was relieving them of their suffering. The thriller will reveal an unsettling genuine story, making it one of the best original films to arrive on Netflix this October.
6. All Quiet on the Western Front
Director: Edward Berger
Writer: Edward Berger, Ian Stokell, Lesley Paterson
Cast: Daniel Brühl, Albrecht Schuch, Sebastian Hülk, Felix Kammerer, Aaron Hilmer,
Edin Hasanovic, Devid Striesow
Available on netflix: October 28
Do you know what frightens me? War. That is why All Quiet on the Western Front, an anti-war novel by Erich Maria Remarque, is still relevant today even though it was first published in 1929. The book has already been made into two motion pictures, one in 1930 and the other in 1979. Now it’s time for Netflix to tell the compelling tale of a German soldier during the last stages of World War I. All Quiet on the Western Front demonstrates how there are no obvious villains and heroes on the battlefield and how every soldier is imprisoned in the same nightmare scenario by narrating the story from the perspective of a German soldier. This war drama is highly recommended for those who want to break up with scary films.
7. Wendell & Wild
Director: Henry Selick
Writer: Henry Selick, Jordan Peele
Voice Cast: Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Lyric Ross, Angela Bassett, James Hong, Ving Rhames
Available on Netflix: October 28
Wendell & Wild, an animated horror marvel from the minds of stop-motion artist Henry Selick and master of frights Jordan Peele, will bring October to a thrilling conclusion. The film tells the tale of Kat Elliot, a teenage Goth girl who must confront her problems and is voiced by Lyric Ross. Literally. If the girl ever wants to lead a regular life, he must figure out why and how she can get rid of Wendell and Wild, who is voiced by Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, respectively. We are all very delighted to see Selick directing a stop-motion movie for the first time since Coraline’s debut. Wendell & Wild is nothing short of amazing.
